ABOUT PEKA

Enjoy a traditional Croatian meal called Peka. The word peka comes from peći, which means to roast or bake. When we say peka in Croatia, we mean two things. A roasted meal of either meat or seafood with potatoes and assorted veggies. Peka also refers to a bell-shaped lid (usually steel or cast iron) that sits on top of a tray with food.

Roasting peka style uses embers and hot ashes from above, and the heat from the hearth from below.

*After the tumultuous Homeland War period, the city authorities fostered contemporary site-specific installations as means to recuperating the city’s soul. To turn the concrete waterfront wall, built hastily during the WWII renovations, into the extraordinary Sea Organ, the architect Nikola Bašić installed a system of marble stairs and tubes which turn sea splashes into musical sounds. He then moved on to create the Greeting to the Sun, a solar-powered platform which, leveled with the promenade, illuminates the area and its visitors in bright colors.

the planning process

OUR GOALS:

  • We set out on a mission to RETURN to the fantastic Croatia we experienced in 2019, but not to REPEAT the exact trip we enjoyed the last time.

  • We have done what we can to chart a route and invent an itinerary which encompasses exploring a variety of islands/towns/places.

  • The framework is generally in place but the experience is for all of us to create and so we have many open and loosely arranged times.

  • For dining OFF the ship: Whether on your own or with groups, feel free to select and arrange whatever suits you. Or choose to join one of the prearranged reservations. We have generally steered away from “party of 36” restaurant reservations because there are too many associated limits (like deposits and set menus).

  • For activities and excursions, while we wanted to establish some options, there are simply no guidelines for how you spend your time in ANY of the destinations. From admiring the port from the comfort of a deck chair on the ship, to walking about the town, to booking the most extreme adventure you can find, we want you to choose what YOU want to do!

  • Your suggestions and ideas are encouraged, so please share them.

  • NOTE: Things will be dynamic during the trip so feel free to come to us or Ana with anything you think of. Ana will pretty much try to pull off whatever is requested!

OUR CHALLENGES: (this is a disclaimer and I am not asking for any sort of response, just providing info)

  • We are charting a customized, non-standard route and as a result there are many layers of coordination.

  • Ana has been super busy this season. We complicated things for her by asking to help plan visits to places she doesn’t have her pre-established connections. Therefore, our cruise will be more challenging than a typical week for her.

  • Due to increased costs for supplies and fuel, the charter agency has been trying to increase pricing and reduce or remove services included in our charter agreement. This has been a source of much confusion and has resulted in an unfriendly working relationship. Luckily however, Ana our Cruise Manager, the boat owner, the Captain, the Crew – the ones who matter most to us - will be the ones handling our actual day to day journey.

  • The reason for explaining these factors is such that all of them affected and delayed the stages of trip planning. if any part of the trip seems less than polished, grab a cocktail, take in the views and please be patient while we work it out
